Games
The major sports for boys are: Football, Rugby, Cricket and Athletics; and for girls: Netball, Hockey, Rounders and Athletics. An ever increasing number of other sports flourish at School including: Swimming, Cross-country, Basketball, Kick Boxing, Canoeing, Golf and Tennis. In every sport, as part of their learning, pupils are encouraged to appreciate the rules of etiquette and sportsmanship that are expected.
In preparation for inter-school matches and competitions, all year groups have one 2-hour Games session per week in the major game for that term. In addition, those representing A and B sides will be expected to attend after school training sessions, although all pupils are welcome.
IPS fields strong, competitive teams at all ages for the major sports listed above, as well as for Swimming. All pupils compete for places in the major sports teams, with A and B teams having regular fixtures until PVI.
In the Upper Seniors, the School fields up to five competitive sides, with players drawn from PVI – UVI. Where appropriate, it is an IPS policy to provide sporting opportunities for all through arranging C and D team fixtures. There are occasions where a whole year group will be involved in a fixture.
Fixtures take place midweek and at weekends. Fixtures are organised against schools including: Alleyn’s, Ardingly, Charterhouse, City of London, Emmanuel, Godolphin and Latymer, Hampton, Highgate, John Fisher, Kingston Grammar, Latymer, St. Bede’s, Tiffin and Winchester College.
IPS offers sporting activity for all interests and aims to attract and develop young sportsmen and women of the highest calibre. Pupils are able to take advantage of the outstanding coaching available and the excellent facilities offered by the recently built (2008) Sports Hall.
The School has playing fields and a swimming pool on site. Regular use is made of the all-weather facilities at The Bank of England Sports Club and the squash and fitness facilities at The Roehampton Club which is a short distance away. Many pupils have demonstrated outstanding sporting achievement and gone on to represent the Region with a number selected for National honours. The School regularly wins competitions at County, Regional and sometimes National level.
