Ibstock Place School

Music

Ibstock Place School offers a comprehensive programme of musical education for all pupils, from the beginner to the most talented performer. We aim to foster a love and enjoyment of music and performing in all children, and to make music accessible to all pupils.

Class Music

All children to Prep 6 receive two lessons of Music a week, one lesson being a dedicated singing session. Singing and playing music enhance self-esteem and improve group behaviour; music teaches concentration, performance and focus and has been found to help advance children’s cognitive development. Class music lessons involve Kodály work, aural training, percussion work, theory, music history and listening to a wide range of styles and genres of music. All children perform in concerts through the year to showcase the work they have been doing.

Choirs and Ensembles

In the Prep School we offer a wide range of musical ensembles. These include: Brass Group, Flute and Recorder Consort, Clarinet Ensemble, Rock Band, and African Drumming. We have two choirs; the Macleod House Choir, which is available to all pupils, and Chamber Choir, entry to which is by audition only. There are regular opportunities for children to perform at lunchtime concerts and performance platforms. Individual Music lessons

We have a team of over fifteen visiting music teachers and, as well as having Singing lessons, pupils can choose to play instruments from a variety that includes: bassoon, cello, clarinet, drums, euphonium, flute, guitar, oboe, recorder, saxophone, trombone, trumpet, and violin.

Strings Scheme

The School runs an extremely successful Strings Scheme, overseen by the Head of Strings. Children from Prep 2 upwards are given the opportunity to learn the violin or cello, and play in a Strings Group, progressing from Beginners to Intermediate and then on to the Macleod House Strings Orchestra. Pupils in Prep 5 and 6 are also able to play in quartets or trios.
