The major games for boys are football, rugby, cricket, athletics and tennis. For girls these are netball, hockey, cricket, athletics and tennis. Fixtures take place throughout the week and at weekends. An ever-increasing number of other sports flourishes. These include badminton, basketball, cross-country, golf, swimming and water polo, all of which are offered as after-school or lunchtime clubs.
In preparation for inter-school matches and competitions, all year groups have an afternoon’s Games session each week in the term’s designated major sport. In addition, those representing A and B sides are expected to attend after-school training sessions, although all pupils are welcome to participate in these. Our fixture list includes highly competitive matches with other leading independent schools including Ardingly, Charterhouse, City of London, Emmanuel, Eton College, Godolphin and Latymer, Hampton, Harrodian, Highgate, King’s College, Kingston Grammar, Latymer Upper, St Benedict’s, St John’s, Sutton Grammar, Tiffin, Westminster, Whitgift and Wimbledon High School.
Trips and tours are an excellent way of providing pupils with essential pre- and post-season training and match play opportunities. Pupils benefit culturally from such trips, as well as improving the quality of their sporting performances and broadening their experience. Sports tours have taken teams representing IPS hockey, netball, football and rugby on tour to Spain, Canada, South Africa, Trinidad and Tobago, and the USA.
