Prep 3 visit to Butser Farm 2026

The pupils had a fantastic visit to Butser Farm, where they learnt about life in the Stone Age.

They discovered how Stone Age people trained wolves to warn them of danger, built homes to protect themselves from the weather, hunted and gathered food, and made use of every part of the animals they caught.

The pupils also enjoyed becoming archaeologists for the day, digging for different objects and learning how people used natural materials. They smoothed chalk with flint, coloured it with a leaf and scratched patterns and pictures onto it.

They also made a fence using the traditional wattle technique, weaving flexible hazel branches between strong oak posts. When they returned to school, they noticed that some of the fences around the grounds use a similar method. They learnt that this technique could also be used to build houses, which were then covered with daub..
