Our Approach

Ibstock's passionate and highly skilled teaching staff create stimulating, supportive and joyful learning environments, encouraging pupils to think deeply, ask questions and explore ideas.

'...respect, understanding and compassion underpin everyday learning,'

Tatler Schools Guide, 2027

Our commitment to excellent teaching is matched by a culture of professional curiosity. Teaching draws on expert approaches and is at all times adaptive, promoting deep learning, effective study habits and independent thinking. Weekly subject clinics give pupils an open door to additional individual or small-group support from teaching staff.

We encourage pupils to go further through a range of pupil-led initiatives, offering opportunities to extend learning, pursue academic interests and develop new skills beyond the classroom. This excellence is reflected in our external examination results, as well as the many achievements our pupils gain beyond the classroom.

The award-winning Pastoral Care  at Ibstock encourages independence, responsibility and a positive learning environment. Exceptional achievements are celebrated at the Headmaster’s termly pizza party, while commendations contribute to House totals in our termly competitions.

Senior Academic FAQ

How many pupils are in a class?
Class sizes are kept small, with most having no more than 24 pupils, and many with much fewer.
Do you stream pupils by ability?
Our pupils are taught in mixed-ability groups for most subjects. We do set pupils by ability in a small number of subjects including Mathematics and some languages.
How much homework is set?

Homework tasks (which we call Prep) are regularly assigned to pupils and the amount of homework increases as they move up through the Senior School. Pupils are expected to spend the allocated time fully focussed on their Prep, which allows for relaxation and other activities in the evenings.

Do you support pupils with additional learning needs?
Yes. Please view our learning support and academic mentoring page here.
What subjects are on the curriculum and what options will my child have?
